Richard Kirby attended Saint Clement’s School before entering UTS in 1910. He graduated in 1914. He was a member of the North Toronto Y.M.C.A. and worked for the Canada Life Assurance Company before enlisting in the Canadian Field Artillery in September 1915. He was assigned to the signaling column and sent to France in December following five weeks’ training in England. On 25 September 1916, he received shrapnel wounds to the abdomen; he died the following day, sending his love to his mother. He is buried, along with many other casualties of the Somme campaign, in the extension to the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery.
